Group of people dancing for exercise

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

After more than two years of pandemic turmoil, things continue to cause uncertainty and stress. In times like these, we could use a little more happiness, connection and hope, and we can find it all through physical movement.

Regular movement helps with weight management, reduces risk of disease, improves sleep, and strengthens bones and muscles. What’s more, it is essential to our happiness and increases life satisfaction.

The key to harnessing the benefits of movement is to move your body in a way that you enjoy, as opposed to doing something you have to force yourself through. Some days, it may mean taking a walk with a friend or doing a gym workout — other days, it might be joining your favorite dance class.

Additional ways to move naturally with joy include:

  • Playing outside with your kids
  • Participating in team sports
  • Taking hikes
  • Chasing your dog at the park
  • Rock climbing
  • Playing Wii Fit
  • Jumping rope or hula-hooping
  • Swimming
  • Having an at-home dance party
  • Bike riding

Movement helps us physically and emotionally. It provides us with a sense of accomplishment, improves our outlook on life and boosts our confidence. When all these things are at play, we are happier and healthier.
